About Sons of Anarchy
Beginning in 2008, Sons of Anarchy first appeared on the FX channel in September of that year and over the subsequent series became FX’s most popular television programme. If you live outside the United States, Sons of Anarchy was something of a slow burner and not particularly widely publicised but if you did manage to catch it you were in for a treat; this show about a fictional motorcycle gang was great stuff.
The premise of the series was simple enough and one wonders why there hasn’t been a series about motorcycle gangs before – or maybe there has and I just missed out. Whatever, Sons of Anarchy is a good one and similarities to real life outlaw motorcycle gangs are obvious right from the beginning.
Returning from the Vietnam War, John Teller and Piermont (Piney) Winston are the co-founders of the first charter, making their headquarters in the town of Charming, California in 1967. This is the birth of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original, it’s acronym being SAMCRO (Sam Crow). Pretty much every aspect of the Sons of Anarchy seems to follow the path of the Hells Angels and that’s no bad thing. The post-Vietnam resurgence, the California origins and the gradual spread of a criminal network around the world.
When the first episode was broadcast the reviews were pretty good; there was the odd criticism but almost all reviewers spoke of the acting ability of the cast and the potential behind the concept. Viewing figures were impressive too, considering the network; average ratings were more than 2 million in the first season and that has increased over the seasons with an impressive average of 5.5 million for the fourth season.
